During the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, Chilean security forces carried out "death flights," throwing political prisoners and victims' bodies from helicopters into the Pacific Ocean and other remote locations to conceal evidence of extrajudicial killings. The aircraft most commonly associated with these operations was the French-built Aérospatiale SA 330 Puma helicopter operated by the Chilean Army. Subsequent judicial investigations, witness testimony, and Chile's official truth commissions confirmed that these flights were part of a systematic campaign of enforced disappearances. The Puma helicopter has since become one of the most recognizable symbols of the regime's human rights abuses.
