The Ministry for State Security (Ministerium für Staatssicherheit)—better known as the Stasi—was East Germany's secret police and intelligence service, serving as one of the most extensive internal security organizations in the communist world. Through a vast network of professional officers and civilian informants, it monitored millions of citizens, infiltrated workplaces, churches, and social groups, and suppressed political dissent before it could develop. The Stasi relied not only on arrests and imprisonment, but also on psychological harassment, intimidation, and covert campaigns to isolate and discredit perceived opponents, creating a pervasive climate of fear and mistrust. By combining relentless surveillance with political repression, the organization became a central instrument through which the ruling Socialist Unity Party maintained authoritarian control over East German society.
