Idi Amin seized power in Uganda in a 1971 military coup and established a brutal personalist dictatorship. His regime used the military and security services to suppress opposition through torture, disappearances, and mass killings. In 1972, Amin expelled Uganda’s Asian population and seized their businesses and property, contributing to economic collapse. His dictatorship ended in 1979 after Tanzanian forces and Ugandan exiles overthrew him, leaving hundreds of thousands dead.
