Formally known as Gasht-e Ershad, Iran's Guidance Patrol is an Islamic religious police force established in 2005 to enforce the country's strict public dress and morality codes. The units—often consisting of both male and female officers—patrol in distinctive vehicles and primarily target women for allegedly violating mandatory hijab laws. Violators face penalties ranging from verbal warnings and "re-education" classes to fines and detention. The patrol gained international notoriety following the September 2022 death of Mahsa Amini in their custody, which sparked widespread, months-long anti-government protests.
