Formally known as Gasht-e Ershad, Iran's Guidance Patrol is an Islamic religious police force established in 2005 to enforce the country's strict public dress and morality codes. Violators face penalties ranging from verbal warnings and "re-education" classes to fines and detention. The patrol gained international notoriety following the September 2022 death of Mahsa Amini in their custody, which sparked widespread, months-long anti-government protests.
