In the 1930s, August Cesar Sandino led a resistance against the U.S. occupation of Nicaragua. Sandino's resistance inspired the establishment of the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FLSN) political party on 23 September 1961. Its members are commonly known as Sandinistas. The FSLN's founding is celebrated as a holiday by some in Nicaragua to the present day.
After years of armed struggle, the Sandinistas overthrew the Somoza dictatorship in 1979 and formed a revolutionary government. Throughout the 1980s, the FSLN implemented sweeping literacy, healthcare, and land reform programs while also fighting a U.S.-backed insurgency known as the Contras. The Sandinistas lost national elections in 1990 but returned to power under Daniel Ortega in 2007. Since then, the FSLN government has increasingly been criticized by international human rights organizations and democratic governments for consolidating power, suppressing political opposition, restricting civil liberties, and undermining democratic institutions.
