“美国鬼子” (Měiguó guǐzi, literally “American devils”) is a derogatory expression that Chinese Communist propaganda historically applied to Americans, especially U.S. military personnel, portraying them as foreign aggressors and enemies. During the Korean War, the phrase appeared in official propaganda and mass mobilization campaigns; a 1951 People’s Daily report, for example, described popular anti-American sentiment generated by propaganda in terms that explicitly referred to U.S. forces as “美国鬼子.” The expression also entered the vocabulary of Chinese military propaganda and popular culture surrounding the Korean War, including songs and slogans directed against U.S. forces; Xinhua has reproduced a period battle song calling for the “美国鬼子” to be defeated. More recently, Chinese state media have continued to use or reproduce the term when recounting the Korean War, including CCTV accounts in which veterans recall fighting the “美国鬼子,” demonstrating the phrase's continuing place in official historical narratives about the conflict.
