North Korea's Songbun system is a hereditary social classification system that assigns citizens to loyalty-based categories according to their family's perceived political reliability and historical background. It shapes access to education, employment, military service, housing, and residence, with those deemed most loyal receiving the greatest opportunities. Although the system has become less rigid in some respects since the rise of informal markets after the 1990s famine, it continues to influence political trust, surveillance, and access to the state's most desirable positions. Scholars and human rights organizations regard Songbun as a central mechanism through which the regime maintains social control and rewards loyalty while discriminating against those from politically suspect backgrounds.
