Established in 1957 under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, SAVAK (National Intelligence and Security Organization) became Iran’s principal domestic intelligence and security agency. It was charged with countering espionage, political opposition, and perceived threats to the monarchy. SAVAK became notorious for surveillance, censorship, detention, interrogation, and the use of extreme violence against suspected opponents, particularly as political dissent intensified during the 1960s and 1970s. The organization was dismantled following the 1979 Iranian Revolution, which brought the Shah’s rule to an end.
