Paektu Secret Camp was Kim Il Sung's guerrilla headquarters and the birthplace of Kim Jong Il, casting the Kim family as the rightful heirs to Korea's sacred origins and revolutionary destiny. Most historians, however, conclude that Kim Jong Il was born in the Soviet Far East while Kim Il Sung's unit was serving under Soviet command, viewing the official account as a carefully constructed political myth rather than established history. By linking the Kim lineage to Korea's most revered mountain, the regime has fused ancient legend with modern revolutionary ideology to reinforce the family's legitimacy and the quasi-sacred status of its rule.
