The Golpe de la Libertad ("Coup of Freedom") is the name used by the government of Equatorial Guinea for the military coup of 3 August 1979, when Lieutenant Colonel Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo overthrew his uncle, President Francisco Macías Nguema, ending one of post-colonial Africa's most violent dictatorships. Macías' rule had been marked by widespread political repression, economic collapse, and mass killings that drove much of the country's educated population into exile, making the coup broadly welcomed by many Equatoguineans and foreign governments at the time. Obiang has since commemorated the event annually as the Day of the Coup of Freedom, portraying it as the moment the nation was rescued from tyranny and placed on a path toward stability. Critics, however, argue that while the 1979 coup ended Macías' brutal regime, it ultimately replaced one long-ruling authoritarian government with another under Obiang, who has remained in power ever since.
